Bloomberg Sports: Making Data Analytics User-Friendly

Bloomberg Sports is built on one simple idea - bringing the same innovative technology that sets Bloomberg apart in the financial world to create the best statistical and analytical tools in sports, both professionals and fantasy players.

In baseball, Bloomberg Sports has partnered with Major League Baseball Advanced Media. With MLB's expertise, real-time data, and news, and with Bloomberg Sports' analytics and technology, they're revolutionizing sports analysis for 2010 and beyond.

This presentation will focus on Bloomberg's tradition of customer service and responsiveness to customer feedback, and how both the pro and consumer products focus on ease of use and visualizations that take the consumer's perspective.

The Value of a Blocked Shot in the NBA: From Dwight Howard to Tim Duncan

The value of a blocked shot can vary along two dimensions. How much did the block contribute to the team’s ability to score points (think Bill Russell creating points by starting a fast break for an easy two points) and how much did the block reduce the opponents ability to score points (think Shane Battier saving points by getting back to block a sure two points on a breakaway layup). We analyze data from the last seven NBA seasons and calculate which NBA players are contributing the most to their teams by blocking shots. The number of blocked shots can be a poor guide as to who is the most valuable shot blocker.
