This talk will present new data about sports betting by college students at the University of Michigan (U-M). From large national data sets of U.S. college students, three rising trends are clear: more than half identify as sports fans, mental health is a higher priority than ever, and online sports betting is on the rise. Most college students go on to develop healthier habits and lead longer, healthier, and more prosperous lives that their non-college enrolled peers. However, the risks inherent to this stage of life—e.g., ongoing brain development, greater risk taking—mean that not all students will thrive. Could strategies to prevent problematic gambling result in a win-win, with safer gambling for students and greater brand loyalty for sportsbooks? Could developing a data partnership between higher ed and sportsbooks improve outcomes for both sides?
