Etan is a PhD candidate at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Prior to Stanford, Etan worked as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company in San Francisco. He holds an A. B. from Brown University in Urban Studies. In addition to umpire calls, Etan studies how pitchers choose which pitches to throw, when NFL kick returners choose to return kickoffs, and what kinds of vehicles automobile manufacturers choose to produce. He is also writing a Bayesian artificial intelligence to play heads-up no-limit Texas Hold'em.
