President of Baseball Operations, New York Mets
Stearns returned to his hometown when he was named the first President of Baseball Operations in Mets history on October 2, 2023. In this role, the Upper East Side native oversees the entire baseball operations department. In his first year leading the Baseball Operations Department, Stearns helped construct a team that went 89-73, a 14-win improvement from 2023. This culminated in a playoff berth and the team’s appearance in the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2015. Prior to the 2025 season, Stearns along with ownership of Steve and Alex Cohen showed a strong commitment to the franchise with the signing of four-time All-Star Juan Soto, the longest contract in franchise history.
He spent eight seasons leading the baseball operations functions for the Milwaukee Brewers before spending 2023 as an advisor to owner Mark Attanasio and GM Matt Arnold. Stearns was named the ninth general manager in Brewers history on September 21, 2015. Officially assumed the position on October 5, 2015 and was promoted to president of baseball operations on January 23, 2019.
The Brewers increased their win total in their first three seasons (2016-18) and earned four straight postseason berths (2018-2021), including two NL Central titles (2018 and 2021), under Stearns’ leadership. In 2018, the team won a franchise record-tying 96 games and the National League Central Division title, swept the Colorado Rockies in the National League Division Series and came within one game of reaching the World Series. The Brewers also earned Baseball America’s 2018 Organization of the Year Award.
He joined the Brewers following three seasons (2013-15) as assistant general manager with the Houston Astros, where he was a key member of the management team, focusing on all areas of baseball operations, including analytics, administration, player development and scouting. During his tenure in Houston, the Astros put together one of Major League Baseball’s most dramatic turnarounds in recent history, going from 51 wins in 2013 to 70 in 2014 and 86 in 2015 en route to clinching the American League Wild Card, the team’s first postseason berth in 10 years.
