Laboratory Director, Joe Gibbs Human Performance Institute
Matt Osborn has been at the forefront of an enduring effort to revolutionize data acquisition technologies for the measurement and analysis of human movement since taking the helm at the Joe Gibbs Human Performance Institute in 2022. The institute's innovative strategies and methodologies, combined with leading-edge ML/AI approaches and one of the world's most advanced data acquisition systems, have positioned JGHPI as a leader in the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underpinning human performance and injury.
Prior to his current role at the Joe Gibbs Human Performance Institute, Matt served in various capacities at Joe Gibbs Racing, beginning as a Vehicle Design Engineer in 2013. During his tenure at Joe Gibbs Racing, from 2013-2022, JGR dominated the sport of NASCAR- clinching over 100 wins, two championship titles, and making ten final-round playoff appearances; contending for a championship title for a decade of consecutive seasons without fail. Matt’s dedication and expertise has led to his position as Laboratory Director at JGHPI, where he leads a diverse team of talented scientists and engineers. Together, they work in tandem with global technology partners to push the boundaries of human performance research and injury prevention.
Before joining Joe Gibbs Racing, Matt's passion for innovation was evident in his role as a Metallurgy and Materials Researcher at the Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. There, he led a small engineering team focused on developing laser-based directed energy deposition processes for the repair of critical Department of Defense rotorcraft and watercraft assets.
Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree in Finance from UNC’s Kenan Flagler Graduate Business School. He has represented UNC at international forums for the evaluation of macro-economic models used in nation-state monetary policy analysis and decision making. Matt pursued degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas prior to his time at UNC.
Outside of his professional life, Matt enjoys getting outside and traveling with his brilliant wife, Jess, and their four young children, Pepper, Scottie, Maclaren, and Jule.
